It happened on one of these rare rainy days in Colorado. We were trying to come up with a great name for the promising new company we were about to launch.
After hours of fruitless brainstorming, we looked outside for some relief. To our dismay, we only saw clouds; even the pair of golden eagles that often circles above the prairie was conspicuously absent. Clouds, clouds and clouds.
But wait! What is the Latin name for cloud? Nimbus. Hmm. This seemed like a nice sounding name. But what fool wants to associate his brand new company with meteorological phenomena such as clouds and rain?
But wait again. Further research led us to the knowledge that Nimbus possesses a very deep mythological meaning. Originally derived from the sun disc, it became a representation of spiritual character through the symbolism of light. We find its use all over the world in ancient civilizations and religions. The nimbus (also called halo or glory) appears behind the head of deities and heroes. This really jells with our sacred respect for life.
After that we already felt much better. Now, how about the Google search? The word Nimbus returns 7,540,000 references. That doesn’t sound good. Yet we wanted to stick to the word Nimbus. We felt that we had to add something to it such as the meaning of life. The Greek word “bios” maybe? Greece was, amongst other great things, a birthplace of modern science. Therefore, the combination of the ancient Greek word “Bio” and the Latin word “Nimbus” symbolizes the glorification of life and science. What other name can better express the founders’ passion for life science? And guess what? Google never heard of BioNimbus!
After that our decision was easy. We baptized our company BioNimbus. Forget about the cloudiness – think about sharing with us our great respect for life and our passion for the science that improves it.
